Peter Beye was born in Berlin in 1932 as the son of the diplomat Ludwig Beye. After finishing school he studied art history , archeology and Christian archeology at the universities of Freiburg im Breisgau and Munich from 1951 to 1957 . In 1957 he was at Kurt Bauch in Freiburg Dr. phil. with his dissertation on Cimbabue and Duecento -Painting doctorate . He then worked as a research volunteer and freelance research assistant in the Bavarian State Painting Collections . Beye then worked from 1960 to 1969 as chief curator at the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart , where he made contact with the director at the time, Erwin Petermann, and was appointed his successor in 1969.

Beye held this office until March 31, 1994; Under his leadership, the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart developed into one of the most respected museums for modern art in Germany. Beye expanded the collection built up by Petermann with important works by Henri Matisse , Pablo Picasso , Giorgio de Chirico , René Magritte , Oskar Schlemmer and Paul Klee as well as Barnett Newman , Mark Rothko , Ad Reinhardt and Joseph Beuys . His high-quality acquisitions include the Italian baroque paintings by Giovanni Paolo Pannini , works by the early Italians as well as Dutch and old German painting with Hans Memling and Bernhard Strigel . The inventory from the 19th century was also enriched by Beyes' acquisition activities, including the Perseus cycle of the English Pre-Raphaelite Edward Burne-Jones . In total, the holdings of the Staatsgalerie increased by more than a third during the Beye era. He dedicated larger solo exhibitions, also in cooperation with foreign museums, to the works of Francis Bacon and Alberto Giacometti , David Buren and Salvador Dali . In March 1984 the New State Gallery was opened during Beye's tenure, the postmodern building of which was designed by the renowned architect James Stirling .

In addition to his work as a director in Stuttgart, Beye was involved in the committee for German art exhibitions abroad at the Foreign Office from 1970 to 1994 . From 1987 to 1994 he was chairman of the museum commission on the advisory board of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation . The negative development of the budget for Bauer extensions and extraordinary purchases was the catalyst of Beyes decision in August 1993, already with 62 years on 1 April 1994 in the retirement to go. After retiring from service, he became involved as a consultant in building up various art collections for various companies, for example for Deutsche Bank . In 2002 Beye published the catalog of works of Willi Baumeister's paintings together with Felicitas Baumeister .
