In formats such as Formula 1: Free Practice , F1: Qualifying and Formula 1: The race reports the Media Group RTL on the Formula 1 , the highest, from the Formula One World Championship (in short: FIA) organized racing series.

history

From 1984 to 1988, the commercial broadcaster RTL Television broadcast Formula 1 races live and in full length in its main program. The Cologne station has been reporting continuously from the premier class of motorsport since 1991 . As the first race, RTL broadcast the French Grand Prix on July 7, 1991 . Michael Schumacher started his Formula 1 career just six weeks later . In the following years, Schumacher triggered a true Formula 1 boom in Germany, which he steadily increased with his world championship titles and transformed Formula 1 at RTL from a fringe sport into a mass phenomenon. Michael Schumacher's fifth World Championship title in 2002 saw an average of 10.44 million viewers watching the 17 Grands Prix.

After the contract negotiated in 2015 with long-standing Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone expired at the end of the 2017 season, RTL announced in December 2017 the agreement with the rights holder Formula One World Championship Limited (FOWC) around its chairman Chase Carey . The American media company Liberty Media has held all of the shares in FOWC since the beginning of 2017 . The new agreement is valid for three years until the end of 2020 and secures Mediengruppe RTL free TV rights to all competition components of each Formula 1 weekend.

Since the previous pay-TV provider Sky has not acquired any live rights to Formula 1 for the period from 2018 to 2020, RTL is the only German TV station, the Grands , in the 69th Formula 1 season that started on March 25, 2018 Prix broadcasts live. In contrast to other large European TV markets such as Great Britain, Italy and France, where Formula 1 can be seen primarily on pay TV, it can still be freely received in Germany.

With the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku, RTL showed a Formula 1 race in Ultra HD quality for the first time on April 29, 2018.

Formats

On a normal racing weekend, on Saturdays RTL first broadcasts the third free training session with RTL: Free Practice and then with RTL: Qualifying the qualification for the respective Grand Prix. On Sundays there will be Formula 1: Countdown , Formula 1: The race and Formula 1: Award ceremony and highlights .

Since the 2018 Formula 1 season, the news channel N-tv , which is also part of the RTL media group, has shown at least one free practice session live on television every race weekend. At the end of the 2020 season, RTL will withdraw from the Formula 1 live broadcast, the reasons being the sharp rise in the prices of broadcasting rights.

Moderators

The moderators Florian König and Kai Ebel , who have been involved in Formula 1 races for more than 20 years (Florian König since 1994, Kai Ebel since 1992), are firmly established figures in Formula 1 broadcasts on RTL . While Kai Ebel reports from the race track and conducts interviews with drivers and officials in the pit lane, Florian König analyzes the race with an expert. Formula 1 world champion Niki Lauda was at his side in this role for 22 years . After his resignation at the end of the 2017 season, RTL signed Nico Rosberg and Timo Glock , who have been taking turns as experts ever since.

At the Mexican Grand Prix in October 2017 , Anna Fleischhauer stepped in as a presenter for Florian König because he reported on Anthony Joshua and Carlos Takam's boxing match .

Commentators

In the early years of Formula 1 at RTL (until 1992), Willy Knupp commented on events, and Heiko Waßer has been reporting on Formula 1 races since 1993 . In his first years he did this together with Jochen Mass , since 1998 he has been the commentator duo at RTL with the former racing driver Christian Danner .

Market shares

Compared with 2016, the market shares in the 2017 Formula 1 season rose slightly from 25.1% to 26.2% (14–59 years 2017: 24.3%, 2016: 23.5%).
