Between 1902 and 1904 he collected plant material for studies in Algeria and Morocco. After he had received his doctorate in 1905, he worked from 1911 as a professor in botany at the natural science faculty in Algiers , where he specialized in phytopathology . He was entrusted with botanical studies by the Moroccan authorities and was responsible for studies in the Sahara . Named species

The following species were first described or reassigned by Maire:

He was also the first to describe the family of Kremplingsverwandten (Paxillaceae) and noted the relationship to the Dickröhrlingen ( Boletus ) in 1902 on the basis of anatomical similarities. This was confirmed many years later on the basis of molecular studies with the establishment of the genera Paxillus and Gyrodon at the base of the clade, which also contains the members of the genus Boletus .

legacy

The Académie des Sciences , of which he had been a member since 1923, awarded Maire the Prix Montagne in 1903 . Several species of mushrooms were named in his honor, including Russula mairei , Amanita mairei from Egypt, Clitocybe mairei , Conocybe mairei , Clavicorona mairei , Cortinarius mairei , Galerina mairei , Hemimycena mairei and Lactarius mairei .
