Until August 1997, he made at a hospital civil service and then moved to Cologne . There he studied general linguistics , English philology and philosophy and was awarded his master's degree in summer 2002 after stops in Kiel and Nijmegen . Linguistics

As a linguist , Schiering completed a language typology training in Cologne, Kiel and Nijmegen. Since his master's thesis he has been working on general linguistic issues ( clitization of pronouns and article forms. An empirical study using the example of Ruhr German , 2002), among other things, on his native variety , Ruhr German . The grammatical peculiarities of the variety are not understood as deviations from standard German ("error"), but rather as an expression of an independent grammatical system.

Since 2003 he has been working on an ethno-linguistic documentation of language use in the Palatinate language island on the Lower Rhine . In his dissertation ( Cliticization and the Evolution of Morphology. A Cross-linguistic Study on Phonology in Grammaticalization , 2006) he establishes a connection between the phonetic profile of a language and the expected language change processes on the basis of linguistic data. In addition to the documentation and description of German colloquial languages and dialects, phonological language typology and research on universals are also one of his main research areas.

Schiering also explores the fringes of linguistics and their intersections with disciplines such as ethnology and sociology , for example in his research on Schalke's fan chants. On the basis of a detailed analysis of the opening ritual at home games of FC Schalke 04 ( Regional Identity in Schalke Football Chants , 2008), he shows how the ritual practices of football fans not only ensure and secure group cohesion, but also how regional identity can be negotiated.

literature

In the summer of 2011, Schiering's debut novel Ruhrpott-Köter was published by Henselowsky Boschmann Verlag in Bottrop . On 144 pages, Schiering tells of the choleric André who is returning to his hometown after twelve years of work-related exile. Reluctantly and disoriented, he stumbles through the northern Ruhr area, which has become strange to him. The nocturnal ride with a hodgepodge of weird figures and embarrassing situations quickly becomes a confrontation therapy in which the returnees have to face their pseudo-sophisticated arrogance. Behind criticism and ridicule is a declaration of love to the densely populated industrial region, which offers its residents support in fast-moving times through close social networks. The sequel, Ruhrpott-Köter 2 , was released in August 2013.

Schiering's short story Wotan was published by Henselowsky Boschmann in late summer 2012 as a contribution to Julia Wilmsmann's Dem Mensch his best buddy - stories about dogs in the district . In August 2018, the Bottroper Verlag Ruhrgebietchen - what your children love about you and what not about you , to which Schiering Gladbeck - contributed autobiography of a love-hate relationship. In the role model book: Small Gallery of Humanity (also Henselowsky Boschmann, Bottrop), he asked the question in 2019: What would Schlingensief do now? Also in 2019 the autobiographical text Gladbeck 10 or the Karstadt building and I appeared in the Gladbeck anthology Lebensgeschichte ist Stadtgeschichte , edited by Leonhard Föcher and Martin W. Schnell.

reception

Herrmann Beckfeld writes in his September 2011 review of Ruhrpott-Köter in the Ruhr Nachrichten : '“Everyone who is sometimes still a little shy about confessing to our homeland will be moved to tears in some scenes. Because it is shown so beautifully that anyone who has ever sniffed the Ruhr area can never get away from it. "

Kira Schmidt describes the book in October 2011 in the WAZ Gladbeck as “a milieu study of the northern Ruhr area, whose heroes are simple people. With pointed wit and good powers of observation, René Schiering describes a piece of home, somewhere between Essen and the Arena of the Royal Blues, between Schlager disco and miners' band. "

Britta Heidemann judged in November 2011 in the national cultural section of the WAZ: "sensationally weird, absolutely realistic", "snotty and romantic, straightforward and weird at the same time."

music

In addition to writing, Schiering also makes music. He has been playing punk rock in the Ruhr area since the early 1990s ; From 2002 to 2008 he toured the Rhineland with the Cologne country formation The Little Opry Band . From 2007 he was guitarist and singer in the Gladbeck punk band Rockwohl Degowski. The album Ruhrpott-Köter was released in April 2011 on Hulk Räckorz / Edel Distribution .

In 2015 he founded the country band Ramblin 'René & The Stetson Five; Their first album was released on Yellow Snake Records in October 2016. In addition to Schiering (guitar and vocals), the group includes Harpo Calypso (bass), Axel Borsch (drums), Butch Delgado (lap steel and guitar) and Katrin Schiering (violin and vocals). Except for one cover song, the pieces are own compositions.
