Resolution 1988 of the UN Security Council was on 17th June 2011 with regard to Resolutions 1267 , 1333 , 1363 , 1373 , 1390 , 1452 , 1455 , 1526 , 1566 , 1617 , 1624 , 1699 , 1730 , 1735 , 1822 and 1904 adopted. With Resolution 1988 the Security Council imposed sanctions on the Taliban . Until resolutions in 1988 and 1989 were passed, the Al-Qaida and Taliban Sanctions Committee was responsible for implementing sanctions against both al-Qaida and the Taliban.

The Security Council reaffirmed that the situation in Afghanistan continues to pose a threat to international peace and security. The resolution includes measures under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter , including:

  • A new regime of sanctions against the Taliban and their allies
  • Afghan Taliban, who fall under the sanctions of Security Council Resolution 1267, are also covered by the new resolution
  • A newly created Afghanistan Sanctions Committee is to monitor the enforcement of the sanctions
  • The committee is supposed to lift sanctions against former Taliban who have renounced violence and accept the arbitration process
  • The Afghan government should send the committee a list of people whom it believes should no longer fall under the sanctions
  • The new sanctions regime should be transparent and sanctions should be enforced.

The annex to the resolution contains guidelines for the new committee.
