Resolution 1986 of the UN Security Council was passed on June 13, 2011 with reference to all resolutions on the situation in Cyprus , in particular resolutions 1251 and 1953 of the UN Security Council. The Security Council extended the mandate of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) for a further 6 months until December 15, 2011 and calls on the Greek and Cypriot sides to intensify their talks. The resolution was passed unanimously.

The resolution calls on the two Cypriot leaders, Derviş Eroğlu and Dimitris Christofias , to intensify their talks, to improve the atmosphere and to involve civil society more closely. Both sides are called upon to take part in discussions with UNFICYP on the demarcation of the buffer zone and the 1989 non-paper .

The Turkish side was urged to restore the military status quo from before June 30, 2000 in Strovilia . Both sides are asked to facilitate the clearance of mines. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was asked to submit a report on the implementation of Security Council Resolution 1986 by December 1, 2011.
