Resolution 1987 of the UN Security Council was on 17th June 2011 by acclamation adopted. In the resolution, the Security Council recommends that the General Assembly of the United Nations elect the Secretary-General of the United Nations , Ban Ki-moon, for a second term.

The decision was originally supposed to be made the day before. It was postponed because the Latin American and Caribbean Group did not want to speak out in favor of Ban. However, this has no influence on the decision, as the General Assembly elects the Secretary General on the recommendation of the Security Council.

On June 21, 2011, Ban Ki-moon was elected by the General Assembly for a second term from January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2016.
