Reza Safinia   ( Persian رضا صفی‌نیا; * 1897 in Tabriz ; † unknown) was an Iranian diplomat .

Career

He practiced the profession of lawyer , entered the foreign service in 1934 and received exequatur as consul general in Baku . He was then Legation Counselor in Moscow and in 1948 Chargé d'Affaires in Baghdad as well as representative to the United Nations in a commission for the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Genocide .

Until March 1950 he was in charge of public relations at the Iranian Foreign Ministry. From March 1950 to July 1951 he headed the Special Representation, Talbieh, Jerusalem . On March 6, 1950, during the Nouruz vacation of the Majles , the Mohammad Mossadegh government established diplomatic relations with the government of David Ben-Gurion . On March 15, 1950, the Iranian government de facto recognized the Israeli government by sending Reza Safinia as special representative.

In July 1951, bilateral relations between Israel and Iran deteriorated. The Iranian Consulate General (Consul General Abdol-Hossein Sadiq-Esfandiari ) was closed by order of the Iranian government and the Iranian representative Reza Safinia was ordered to leave Jerusalem. This decision was apparently the result of Egypt's promise that its representative would assist Iran at the International Court of Justice in The Hague . The Anglo-Persian Oil Company had sued for compensation for the nationalization of the Iranian oil industry. Arab states offered Iran to support them in this dispute. When asked, the Iranian government cited budgetary constraints as the cause of the representative withdrawal to the Israeli government. One argument in favor of the turnaround was that neighbors Iraq should be favorably agreed and, if the oil were to be recaptured militarily, be prevented from providing a deployment area for intervention troops.

From 1958 Switzerland was the protective power of Iranian interests in Israel
