description

Appearance and foliage leaf

Habit, leaves and flowers

Rhododendron williamsianum grows as an evergreen shrub that can reach heights of 1 to 2 meters. Older branches have a bald, brownish bark . The slender branches with a diameter of 0.3 to 0.5 centimeters have a bark that is initially greenish to slightly purple and has a few glands.

The alternate leaves are arranged in a petiole and a leaf blade. The sparsely hairy leaf stalk is 1 to 1.5 centimeters long and has a flat top and a rounded bottom. The simple and leathery leaf blade is 2.5 to 5 centimeters long and 2 to 4 centimeters wide, ovoid to approximately circular. The base of the spade is heart-shaped to approximately rounded, the upper end is rounded and ends in a small point. The upper side of the leaf is bare and dark green, the underside is greyish-white. On both sides of the leaf, the midrib and the eleven to twelve pairs of lateral nerves are raised. The leaf veins can be clearly seen on the underside of the leaf.

Inflorescence and flower

The flowering period extends in the natural range from April to May. The umbelliferous inflorescence contains two to six flowers. The 5 to 8 millimeter long inflorescence axis is sparsely hairy glandular. The strong flower stalk, which is covered with long glandular hairs, is 2 to 3 centimeters long.

The hermaphrodite flowers are five or sixfold with a double flower envelope . The six sepals with short glandular hairs on the outside and the edges form a disc-shaped calyx that ends in 1 to 2 millimeters long, broadly triangular calyx teeth. The five or six 3.5 to 4 centimeters long and 4 to 4.5 centimeters wide petals are broad, bell-shaped fused and reddish in color. The approximately circular and sanded corolla lobes are 1 to 1.5 inches long and about 2 inches wide. The 10 to 14 unequal stamens are between 1.8 and 3 centimeters long. The stamens are glabrous, and the dark reddish-purple anthers are egg-shaped. The bald ovary is egg-shaped with a diameter of about 0.5 centimeters. The stylus, which is usually bald, is approximately 3.5 centimeters long and almost as long as the petals and ends in a cephalic scar .

fruit

When ripe, the bald capsule fruits are cylindrical with a length of 1.5 to 2.5 centimeters and a diameter of about 0.6 centimeters. The capsule fruits ripen in China from August to September.

Occurrence

The natural range of Rhododendron williamsianum is in the Chinese provinces of western Guizhou , southwestern Sichuan , northeastern Yunnan and in southeastern Tibet Autonomous Region . Rhododendron williamsianum thrives in open forests, on mountain slopes and on rocks at altitudes of 1,800 to 2,800 meters.

Systematics

Rhododendron williamsianum belongs to the Williamsiana subsection from the Ponticum section in the Hymenanthes subgenus within the Rhododendron genus .

The first description of Rhododendron williamsianum was made in 1913 by Alfred Rehder and Ernest Henry Wilson in Plantae Wilsonianae to enumeration of the woody plants collected in western China for the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University during the years 1907, 1908 and 1910 by EH Wilson edited by Charles Sprague Sargent , Volume 1, Page 538.
