Rhonex Kipruto (born October 12, 1999 in the Keiyo District ) is a Kenyan long-distance runner .

Athletic career

At the national level, Kipruto first drew attention to himself when he finished eleven seconds behind U18 world champion Richard Yator at the regional cross-country championships of the Central Rift in February 2017 . At the Kenyan Cross Country Championships held two weeks later in Nairobi , he came in 16th in the junior race. Later in the year, he ran in his 10,000-meter debut at Eldoret 28: 56.5 minutes in May and won a month later over this distance the Kenyan eliminations ( trials ) for the U20 African Championships , in which he did not take part. Kipruto's first race outside Kenya followed in September, at the Grand Prix of Prague over 10 kilometers, three seconds behind the winner Benard Kimeli, third in 27:13 minutes. With this time he undercut the existing U20 world best, but two seconds before him his training partner Mathew Kimeli, who also belongs to the U20, crossed the finish line.

In February 2018, Kipruto ran at the Kenyan Cross Country Championships as second in the junior race behind Stanley Waithaka in second place. One month later he won the U20 race at the African Cross Country Championships in Ech Cheliff, Algeria, this time five seconds ahead of Waithaka. At the end of April he improved the course record at the Healthy Kidney 10K in New York City as the winner ahead of Mathew Kimeli to 27:08 minutes and in June he won the Kenyan trials for the U20 World Championships in Nairobi in 27: 49.6 minutes with almost thirty Seconds ahead. He finally won the U20 World Championships held in Tampere , Finland in July with a championship record of 27: 21.08 min nineteen seconds ahead of Ugandan Jacob Kiplimo . In autumn he competed again over the 10 kilometers in Prague and this time, after 26:46 minutes, he was only two seconds above the world record time of Leonard Komon .

Kipruto started the 2019 season in January with a win at the Cross Internacional Juan Muguerza in Elgoibar, Basque. In February he was surprisingly only sixth at the Kenyan Cross Country Championships in Eldoret . So he qualified for the Cross Country World Championships in Aarhus , Denmark , where he again finished 6th and, after adding up the individual results, won silver with the team behind Ethiopia. The end of May he chose the 10,000 meters as part of the Diamond League meetings more Stockholm Bauhaus Athletics in a new personal best and stadium record of 26: 50.16 min for themselves.

Kipruto is trained in Iten by the Irish Colm O'Connell, who came to Kenya as a missionary and teacher in 1976 and has since trained a large number of Kenyan runners, including double Olympic champion and world record holder David Rudisha . Kipruto's younger brother Bravin Kiptoo is also a runner and won gold over 10,000 meters at the 2019 Junior African Championships .

The 2020 season began with a great start in the 10 km road race in Valencia (Spain). There Kipruto beat the previous world record of the Ugandan Joshua Cheptegei by 14 seconds with a time of 26:24 min (unofficially) .
