The Rhynchocalyx lawsonioides is the only plant species of the genus Rhynchocalyx in the plant family of the Penaeaceae within the order of the myrtle-like (Myrtales).

description

In Rhynchocalyx lawsonioides is a small evergreen tree . The stalked, simple foliage leaves are opposite to most of the other myrtle-like , in this species they are cross- opposite to whorled , arranged on the branches. Stipules are present.

Many flowers are terminal or axillary together in paniculate inflorescences . The hermaphroditic flowers are radially symmetrical and sixfold with a double perianth . A hypanthium is formed. The six free petals are nailed. There is only one circle with six free, fertile stamens . The stamens are long. The two carpels are a top permanent ovary grown. The style is shorter than the ovary and the stigma is head-shaped.

There are fruit capsules formed. The seeds have a wing at one end.

The plants accumulate Al ions .

Rhynchocalyx lawsonioides is a floral element of the Capensis . It is endemic to the eastern South African provinces of KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape . This species grows there in the coastal forests along the Indian Ocean .

Systematics

The monotypical genus Rhynchocalyx contains the only species:

  • Rhynchocalyx lawsonioides olive.

This species was previously placed in the Lythraceae family or formed the Rhynchocalycaceae family alone. Today it belongs to the purely African family of the Penaeaceae .
