Ricardo Alexandre Paulo Ribeiro (born August 19, 1981 in Lisbon ) is a Portuguese fado singer.

Career

Ribeiro grew up in the Ajuda district of Lisbon, where he first performed in a music school when he was 12. Besides Alfredo Marceneiro , it was above all Fernando Maurício , whose singing impressed him. At the age of 15 he sang regularly with him in the fado bar Os Ferreiras . He then sang in the NóNó in Bairro Alto , which enabled him to move to the long -established bars O Faia and Luso .

After finishing second in 1996, he achieved first place in 1997 and 1998 in the “Grande Noite do Fado de Lisboa” (“Big Night of Lisbon Fado”), which has been held annually since 1945 .

His first published recording was his contribution in 2004 to the Amália Rodrigues Tribute compilation on the World Connection label . In the same year his debut album was released. In 2005 he was awarded the Male New Discovery of the Year award from the Amália Rodrigues Foundation. In the same year he sang alongside Celeste Rodrigues , Argentina Santos and Alcindo de Carvalho in the piece "Cabelo Branco é Saudade" (roughly: "White hair stands for longing"). Staged by Ricardo Pais, the piece went on tour after the performances at the Teatro Nacional de São João . a. to Paris ( Cité de la musique ), Madrid ( Teatro de la Abadia ), Naples ( Teatro Mercadante ), Porto ( Casa da Música ) and Frankfurt am Main ( Oper Frankfurt ).

Ribeiro worked on Carlos Saura's film Fados in 2007 . In addition to guest appearances with many other Portuguese musicians and projects such. B. Rão Kyao , in 2008 he was the singer for the project of the Lebanese musician Rabih Abou-Khalil , who had compositions by himself furnished with Portuguese poems and sung by Ribeiro for an entire album. Recorded together with the musicians Luciano Biondini , Michel Godard , Jarrod Cagwin and Walter Quintus and released on the Enja (Winckelmann) label, “Rabih Abou-Khalil em português” received critical acclaim and was one of the 10 best albums by the British music magazine Songlines elected. Ribeiro was referred to as "... the rising star of Lisbon Fado" ("the rising star of Lisbon Fado").

In 2007 he had a guest appearance with two songs in the film "Rio Turvo" by Edgar Pêra and in 2009 he sang two pieces in one film again, this time in the award-winning film adaptation of Agustina Bessa-Luís ' novel "A Corte do Norte" by the director João Botelho .

The 2010 album "Porta do Coração" ("Door of the Heart") entered the Portuguese sales charts at 5th place after it was released. In 2011 he was awarded the Amália Rodrigues Foundation's prize for “Best Performer of the Year” and gave two sold-out concerts in the Teatro São Luiz .
