Richard Albert Bell

Richard "Dick" Albert Bell PC QC (born September 4, 1913 in Britannia Bay , Ontario , † March 20, 1988 in Ottawa , Ontario) was a Canadian politician of the Progressive Conservative Party (PC) who was a member of the House of Commons for eight years was. He also served as Minister for Citizenship and Immigration in the 18th Canadian Cabinet of Prime Minister John Diefenbaker from 1962 to 1963 .

Life

Bell completed a law degree after attending school and then took up a job as a barrister . He was recognized for his lawyer's merits for Attorney General (Queen's Counsel) appointed. In the election of June 10, 1957 , he was elected to the House of Commons for the first time for the Progressive Conservative Party in the Carleton constituency and was a member of this until his defeat in the House of Commons election on April 8, 1963 .

After the PC won the general election on June 10, 1957 , Walker was appointed Parliamentary Assistant to Treasury Secretary Donald Fleming on August 19, 1957 and held this junior ministerial post until February 1, 1958. After that, he was between May 12, 1958 and May 18, 1957. July 1959 Vice-Chairman of the House Standing Committee on Public Accounts. He was later from November 18, 1959 to November 17, 1961 and again between January 18 and April 19, 1962 Parliamentary Assistant to Treasury Secretary Donald Fleming.

On August 9, 1962, Bell was appointed to the 18th Cabinet by Prime Minister John Diefenbaker as part of a cabinet reshuffle, and was Minister for Citizenship and Immigration there until the end of Diefenbaker's tenure on April 21, 1963.

In the election of November 8, 1965 , he was re-elected a member of the House of Commons and again represented the constituency of Carleton . During this time he was spokesman for the opposition PC parliamentary group on citizenship and immigration from 1966 to 1968 . In the following election on June 25, 1968 , he ran after the dissolution of his previous constituency in Ottawa West . However, he was defeated by the candidate of the Liberal Party , Cyril Lloyd Francis , who received 23,750 votes, while Bell only got 16,392 votes. He then withdrew from politics.

After his death, he was buried in Pinecrest Cemetery , Ottawa.
