Richard Barnes (born June 16, 1944 in Sandstead , Surrey , Great Britain ) is an English singer who had two minor hits in the early 1970s .

Life

In 1964, the bands Patrick Dane & the Quiet Five merged with members of the Vikings and a tornado- like band called Gemini, and they were called The Quiet Five for short. After a few personnel changes, the following members of the Quiet Five found stability: John Howell (organ, vocals), Kris Ife (guitar, vocals), Richard Barnes (bass, vocals), Roger McKew (solo guitar), Ray Hailey (drums) and John “Satch “Goswell (saxophone). Despite the name, the band consisted of six members. They released five singles from 1965 to 1967. The debut When the Morning Sun Dries the Dew made it to number 50 in the UK charts. The third single, a cover version of Simon & Garfunkel's Homeward Bound , even made it to number 44 and did not get any further because CBS had decided to also release the original by Simon & Garfunkel as a single. Before the last single, Ray Hailey was replaced by Roger "Tex" Marsh. The Quiet Five were quite popular as a live band through touring with the Beatles , Rolling Stones , Donovan , Byrds and others. a. In 1967 the band broke up. Kris Ife tried it solo and then together with Mark Wirtz in the band Judd. Roger McKew became a popular studio musician (also played with Neil Innes in The World after the Bonzo Dog Band split up ).

Richard Barnes made it to number 35 in the British charts in May 1970 with his single Take to the Mountains . With the follow-up single Go North , he took part in the short-lived Grand Prix RTL International Song Contest of 1970, where he came second behind the French contribution by Mike Brant ( Mais dans la lumière ). Go North reached number 38 in the British charts in November. For the German market, he recorded both pieces in German as Today there are no dreams or who knows .

The LP , which contained both singles, hardly sold and is now a very rare collector's item, as is the German single.

All of his later attempts failed to work their way up to the charts. In 1976 he released the album Hazzard & Barnes together with producer Tony Hazzard .

He later appeared as an actor and singer in the London performances of Jesus Christ Superstar , Jeanne and Chess . In English television he appeared with minor roles in Winds of War and Dr. Who on.

In 2011 he joined the Norwich-based cover band Lou and the Diamonds as bassist and singer.
