Friedrich Richard Franke (born May 5, 1832 in Rinteln , † January 28, 1905 in Freiberg ) was a German classical philologist and educator .

Life

Franke was born in Rinteln in 1832 as the son of the philologist Ludwig Gottlieb Friedrich Franke . From 1842 to 1845 he attended the grammar school in Fulda and from 1845 to 1852 the Royal State School in Meißen , where his father was principal. From 1851 he studied philology at the University of Jena and Leipzig University . His teachers included Karl Wilhelm Göttling , Johann Gustav Droysen , Anton Westermann , Friedrich Zarncke , Moritz Wilhelm Drobisch and Franz Overbeck . He passed the state examination and was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD. He then studied with August Boeckh and Moriz Haupt at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin .

In 1855 he became a teacher of ancient languages ​​at the Kreuzschule and at the Krause Institute in Dresden. In 1857 he went to the grammar school in Zwickau, where Friedrich Kraner was rector. In 1858 he became an adjunct at the Royal State School in Pforta . From 1861 to 1864 he worked as a sub-principal at the Princely Reussian Gymnasium in Gera . In 1864 he was transferred to the Burg Gymnasium . From 1868 to 1872 he was professor and vice-principal under Friedrich August Eckstein of the Thomas School in Leipzig . From 1872 to 1894 he was rector of the grammar school in Freiberg . Franke was a first class knight of the Saxon Order of Civil Merit . After an accident he died in Freiberg in 1905.
