Richard Gwilt

Richard Gwilt (* 1958 in Edinburgh ) is a British violinist, composer , university professor, music editor, music publisher and has been a member of the well-known baroque ensemble London Baroque since 1984 .

Richard Gwilt studied at the University of Birmingham , violin with Orrea Pernel (1906–1993) and composition with John Joubert . He continued his studies at the University of Michigan , where he began turning to the baroque violin in 1980 . Back in England in 1983, he joined the emerging movement of historical performance practice .

Gwilt has played with numerous ensembles, including the English Concert under Trevor Pinnock , the Academy of Ancient Music under Christopher Hogwood , the English Baroque Soloists under John Eliot Gardiner and the "London Classical Players" under Roger Norrington . Among the better-known ensembles with whom he has worked on the European mainland are Anima Eterna Brugge under Jos van Immerseel and the French orchestra " La Chapelle Royale " under Philippe Herreweghe .

He became known as a chamber musician and soloist, above all as a member of the "London Baroque", to which he has been a member since 1984 and with whom he has performed in the world's most famous concert halls. In addition to numerous radio and television appearances, he participated in more than 30 CD productions in this ensemble.

Together with the violinist Irmgard Schaller , he founded the ensemble “Arcomelos” in 1999, which performs in duo, classical string trio or with a larger figured bass group , occasionally also with singers.

Richard Gwilt accepted invitations to various baroque orchestras as conductor and musical director, for example with the Portuguese “Remix Baroque Ensemble” in Porto, with the “Concerto Armonico” in Freiburg, and with the early music ensemble of the Cologne University of Music.

In 1986 Richard Gwilt received a professorship for baroque violin and viola at Trinity College of Music in London, where he worked until 2005, during which time he taught at the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal College of Music . In 2005 Gwilt was appointed professor for baroque violin at the Cologne University of Music . In addition to various visiting professorships, he regularly gives master classes in Europe and overseas.

With the “RG Editions”, the experienced interpreter has been working as an editor and publisher since 1996. Most of the publisher's new releases are works for strings from the 17th and 18th centuries that have not previously been available in an edition that does justice to historical performance practice.

His compositional oeuvre mainly includes chamber music for strings, including two string quartets, a string trio and a duo for two violins. He also composed some works for voice and strings, such as “A Dream within a Dream” for alto and string sextet.
