Richard Herber

Richard Herber (born December 20, 1911 in Leipzig , † June 19, 1968 in East Berlin ) was a German politician ( SED ). He was a member of the SED Central Committee and head of the Ulbricht Office in the SED Central Committee.

Life

Herber, son of a carpenter, attended elementary school . From 1926 to 1929 he trained as a book printer and bookbinder. In 1926 he became a member of the SAJ and in 1929 the SPD . Between 1930 and 1935 he did odd jobs, but was mostly unemployed. In 1931 he joined the KPD and became agitprop leader in the Leipzig district of Thekla .

After the " seizure of power " by the National Socialists in 1933, Herber was active in the resistance . He worked as a cashier and courier and sold illegal literature. In 1935/1936 he worked in the construction of the autobahn, from 1936 to 1942 he worked as a cylindrical grinder in Leipzig. In 1942 he was drafted into the army for military service. Herber was an American prisoner of war from May to August 1945 .

In 1945/1946 he was an employee of the judicial organs in Leipzig, including administrative senior secretary in Meusdorf prison . From 1947 he worked as a teacher, then as headmaster at the district party school in Hartmannsdorf . In 1948/1949 he attended the party college "Karl Marx" and was then the main speaker of the party training department, later the propaganda department of the Central Secretariat and Central Committee of the SED.

From 1949 he held leading positions in the apparatus of the Central Committee of the SED: in 1950/1951 he was a member of the central special commission for the review of the members and candidates of the SED, from May 1949 to 1952 chief adviser or sector leader (party schools), from January 1953 as head Deputy Head of the Central Committee Propaganda Department of the Cadre Sector. From August 1953 until his death in June 1968 he was Walter Ulbricht's personal assistant. From 1958 to 1968 he also acted as first secretary of the party organization of the SED Central Committee and was head of Walter Ulbricht's office. In 1963 he received his doctorate from the National Academy of Law and Political Science in Potsdam-Babelsberg to Dr. rer. pole. From 1963 to 1967 he was a candidate and from 1967 until his death a member of the Central Committee of the SED.
