Richard Weberberger

Richard Josef Weberberger or Ricardo José Weberberger OSB (born September 5, 1939 in Leonfelden , Upper Austria ; † August 17, 2010 in Linz ) was a Roman Catholic religious and bishop of Barreiras in the state of Bahia , Brazil .

Life

Josef Weberberger grew up in Gaspoltshofen and graduated from the Stiftsgymnasium Kremsmünster . He entered the Benedictine Abbey of Kremsmünster in 1958 , took the religious name Richard and made his solemn profession in 1962 . After studying theology and philosophy in Rome, Salzburg and Leuven, he was ordained a priest on August 15, 1964 .

After completing his doctorate , he was a pastor in various parishes and spiritual at the Benedictine convent in Steinerkirchen an der Traun . He taught religion and philosophy at the Stiftsgymnasium in Kremsmünster and Schlierbach .

After the Benedictines of Kremsmünster took over the parish of Barreiras in northeastern Brazil in 1970 for pastoral care, Weberberger started working there from 1974. Pope John Paul II appointed him on May 21, 1979 as the first bishop of the Barreiras diocese, which was established on the same date . On July 11th of the same year Archbishop Paul Augustin Mayer OSB donated him the episcopal ordination . Co- consecrators were the Linz Bishop Franz Zauner and his auxiliary bishop, the later Cor-Unum- President Alois Wagner . For twelve years he was a member of the Permanent Council of the Brazilian Bishops 'Conference (CNBB) and from 1998 to 2003 President of the Regional Bishops' Conference Northeast 3.

He became an honorary citizen of several cities and the state of Bahia. In 1999 the Province of Upper Austria honored him with the Human Rights Prize of the Province of Upper Austria . In 2009, Bishop Weberberger celebrated his 30th anniversary as a bishop in Kremsmünster Abbey and received the Grand Decoration of Honor in Gold with the star for services to the Republic of Austria .

In May 2010 he found out about his cancer and was treated in Linz, where he died in the hospital of the Sisters of Mercy in Linz. His grave is located in the Kremsmünster Abbey Cemetery.
