Richard Klein (artist)

Richard Klein (born January 7, 1890 in Munich , † July 31, 1967 in Weßling near Munich) was a German painter , sculptor , graphic artist and medalist . From 1935 he was director of the State School for Applied Arts in Munich. As an important artist for the National Socialist regime , he was on the so-called God-gifted list .

Career

After attending a college for sculpture and plastering , Klein worked as a plasterer . From 1908 he studied with Angelo Jank and Franz von Stuck at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich . From 1914, at the beginning of the First World War, he designed patriotic medals. From 1917, Klein worked in his own studio in Munich. During the First World War he made patriotic postcards. Since 1919 he was a member of the Munich Secession .

In 1935 he was appointed director of the State School for Applied Arts in Munich, and after the state school was elevated to a university as an Academy for Applied Arts by the National Socialist rulers, he was also appointed professor . From 1937 he was on the artistic advisory board of the journal Die Kunst im Third Reich with Albert Speer , Fritz Todt and Leonhard Gall .

Klein was the Reich Senator for Culture and from 1936 Presidential Councilor of the Reich Chamber of Fine Arts .

Works and exhibitions

Klein created sculptures in bronze and terracotta, paintings preferably in oil and etchings, with which he participated in exhibitions at the Munich Secession from 1915. In the 1930s and 1940s that showed the understanding of art of National Socialism undertook Great German Art Exhibition in Munich's Haus der Deutschen Kunst Richard Klein's works.

The subject of Klein's medals was initially politicians and artists of his time. From 1933 he designed mainly National Socialist emblems, medals and trophies, including the sash for the winner of the brown ribbon , the identification symbol of the "Great German Art Exhibition" and the National Socialist version of the Munich city arms .

Richard Klein designed some of the postage stamps that appeared in National Socialist Germany, including the special stamps issued annually for the race for the brown ribbon and the definitive stamps with the portrait of Adolf Hitler .
