John Richard "Dick" McIntosh (born September 25, 1939 in New York City ) is an American cell biologist and biophysicist and professor emeritus at the University of Colorado Boulder .

McIntosch earned a bachelor's degree in physics from Harvard University in 1961 and a Ph.D. in biophysics with the topic Structure, biology and chemistry of microtubules in chicken spermatids . From 1984 to 2006 he headed the laboratory for 3D electron microscopy of the cell at the University of Colorado Boulder . From 1994 to 2006 he was a research professor at the American Cancer Society . It deals with the mechanisms of the three-dimensional organization of the cell with regard to the shape of the cell and the arrangement of its organelles , especially during cell division . One focus is the electron microscopic examination of the microtubules and the spindle apparatus and their enzymatic and mechanical relationships with one another.

McIntosh has (as of November 2017) an h-index of 96.

McIntosh was President of the American Society for Cell Biology in 1994 , which awarded him the Keith R. Porter Lecture in 1982 and the EB Wilson Medal in 2011 . In 1999 he was elected to both the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
