In addition to his role as legal advisor as the coordinator of the ERASMUS and SOCRATES program of the European Union , Puza has endeavored to promote international student exchanges within his faculty and has concluded innovative partnership agreements with Islamic-theological faculties in Istanbul and Çanakkale . In addition, he supports students as a liaison lecturer for the German National Academic Foundation .

Permanent visiting professorships have led Puza to, among others, Pavia , the Pontificia Facoltà Teologica “San Giovanni Evangelista” di Sicilia in Palermo , the Institut catholique and the Université Jean Monet in Paris as well as the Université Marc Bloch and the Université Robert Schuman in Strasbourg . He regularly organizes specialist conferences in cooperation with the Academy of the Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart as well as international congresses.

Puza is President of the European Consortium for Church and State Research as well as a member of the International Consortium "Droit canonique et culture", of the Consociatio Internationalis Studio Iuris Canonici Promovendo , of the Working Group for Canon Law (the association of German representatives for church law) and of the Ecclesiastical legal office in matters relating to church contributions in the diocese of Graz-Seckau . Puza was an advisor to the Diocesan Synod of the Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart 1985/1986 and Adiutor Secretarii Specialis to the Synod of Bishops in Rome in 1987 on the subject of the “vocation and mission of the laity in church and world”. He is a diocesan judge at the Episcopal Office of Rottenburg and was appointed by the Bishop of Rottenburg-Stuttgart as a member of the Diocesan Council and the Commission on Sexual Abuse by Clergy.

Puza's students include professors Andreas Weiß ( Catholic University of Eichstätt ), René Pahud de Mortanges ( University of Friborg ) and Jean Werckmeister ( Université Marc Bloch Strasbourg ) as well as private lecturers Hans-Jürgen Guth ( Tübingen ) and Karl-Christoph Kuhn ( Ratshausen ) .

The main research areas of Puza are in the areas of ecclesiastical legal history, ecclesiastical marriage law and property law as well as state church law . He works as an expert in these areas and in patronage law and university law. Recently Puza has been researching the law of non-Catholic denominations and other religions.

Puza has written a wide range of scientific publications. In addition to a textbook on canon law (3rd edition in preparation), there are monographs, editorships of books and magazines (including the Internet magazine NomoK @ non - (state) church law on the web ), essays and lexicon articles on, among other things, the Catholic concept of marriage and the legal status of remarried divorced people in of the Catholic Church and the problem of the so-called viri probati . Puza has also dealt with questions of legal history and has published publications on the jurisprudence of the Apostolic Signature and the Roman Rota in the early modern period. In addition, numerous publications are dedicated to questions from the area of state church law. Puza has dealt with problems of church patronage several times . He made repeated comments on questions of state church law in connection with German reunification.

On his sixtieth birthday Puza received a festschrift entitled Flexibilitas iuris canonici (edited by Andreas Weiß and Stefan Ihli, Frankfurt 2003).

However, it can already be stated today that in addition to the question of the position of the laity in the Catholic Church, the diaconal function of canon law is a particular concern of Puza. He is thus in the tradition of the school of Italian lay canonists and the Second Vatican Council . For Puza, law in the service of people's salvation requires a smooth interpretation of legal norms using canonical principles such as B. Epikie , Aequitas canonica and Oikonomia .

Due to his new research focus on the comparison of religious legal systems, Puza has also made a contribution to the dialogue between denominations and religions. Through this interreligious dialogue, primarily through international research collaborations and through a legal-historical perspective, Puza tries to transcend the limitations of the canonical schools within Germany and thereby open up new horizons for his subject.
