Richard Says Goodbye , and The Professor , is an American tragicomedy from the year 2018 . The premiere took place on October 5, 2018 at the Zurich Film Festival in the presence of director Wayne Roberts and leading actor Johnny Depp . In the United States, the film was released on May 17, 2019. The film was released on Prime Video on July 25, 2020 .

Richard is a frustrated and burned out college professor. One day he is diagnosed with an incurable disease and is confronted with the near end of his existence. He would like to enjoy the time remaining to him to the full, free from all social conventions and constraints.

So he begins to turn his life upside down, messes with anyone who gets in his way, throws himself into sexual escapades, smokes and drinks and doesn't leave any vice out. Freed in this way, he feels alive and happy as he has not for a long time, but time is running out for him.

Filming took place in British Columbia , Canada , from July 2017 . Filming locations were Vancouver , the Royal Roads University in Victoria and New Westminster . The film was produced by Global Road Entertainment, Automatik Entertainment, Leeding Media and Relic Pictures.

After Katie Says Goodbye (2016) with Olivia Cooke in the title role, this is the second feature film from director and screenwriter Wayne Roberts.

Christian Klosz found on filmpluskritik.com that the film was completely tailored to Johnny Depp and his character, everything else was accompanying music. In the worse moments, the direction of involuntary parody, in the better moments Depp is allowed to utter clever wisdom. The script is solid, the staging, including the soundtrack, is neat, the subject (decadent US elite university milieu) is reminiscent of Californication , although The Professor loses the quality comparison.
