Richard Seidel (producer)

Richard Seidel is an American music producer .

After graduating from Rutgers University, Richard Seidel worked at the Institute of Jazz Studies there from 1970 to 1972 and then moved to Boston to continue his studies at Berklee College of Music . He also took courses at the New England Conservatory of Music and worked as an assistant for Gunther Schuller . In 1974 he was the editor of the Schwann catalog for the areas of jazz and popular music , then distributed by Rounder Records . Here it came to the collaboration with John Koenig from Contemporary Records in Los Angeles. In the late 1970s, he produced albums a. a. by George Cables , Chico Freeman , Joe Farrell, and Tete Montoliu .

After his return to New York in 1982 he worked for the PolyGram group, which imprinted the jazz label Verve Records . As A&R he was responsible for productions of the label for twenty years, such as albums by Roy Hargrove , Joe Henderson ( Lush Life: The Music of Billy Strayhorn , 1991 and So Near, So Far (Musings for Miles) 1992), Shirley Horn , Christian McBride , Cassandra Wilson or the CD reproduction of Norman Granz ' The Jazz Scene and the re-release of The Essential Billie Holiday - Carnegie Hall Concert . From 2002 he works as a freelancer for Sony and looks after a. a. the re-releases of artists from the CTI label like Ron Carter or Stanley Turrentine . He is also responsible for Sony Legacy Reissues from Miles Davis ( Live in Europe 1967: The Bootleg Series Vol. 1 and Bitches Brew Live ), Nina Simone , Wayne Shorter , John McLaughlin , Herbie Hancock , Freddie Hubbard , Jaco Pastorius and George Benson .
