Richard of Koenig-Warthausen

Richard Karl Wilhelm von König-Warthausen , also Richard Karl Wilhelm Freiherr König von und zu Warthausen; (* February 6, 1830 in Warthausen ; † January 4, 1911 ibid) was a German naturalist , specializing in ornithology and oology .

Life

Richard von König-Warthausen received his first education from the dean Christian August von Landerer before he attended high school in Ulm from 1842 to 1846. He then studied forestry and agriculture at the University of Tübingen , the Tharandt Forest Academy and the Hohenheim Agricultural Academy . Because of his status he did not have to accept a state position and was able to devote himself to the natural sciences and build up a larger ornithological and oological collection. From 1862 to 1894 he was a member of the Württemberg state estates as a representative of the knighthood of the Danube district. As a legal knight of the Order of St. John , he led catering trains to France in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 and was awarded the Iron Cross on a white ribbon . Also in 1871 Richard von König-Warthausen received the Knight's Cross of the Olga Order . In 1891 he took part in the second international ornithological congress in Budapest as a delegate of the royal Württemberg government. The University of Tübingen awarded him an honorary doctorate .

In 1853 Richard von König-Warthausen joined the Association for Patriotic Natural History in Württemberg and was made an honorary member in 1898. He was chairman of the "Molasseklub", an association of Upper Swabian natural scientists, which in 1874 joined the association for natural history as the "Upper Swabian branch association for patriotic natural history". On December 17, 1876 he was admitted to the Leopoldina.

His scientific collection was acquired in 1955 by the State Museum of Natural History in Stuttgart from Elisabeth von König-Warthausen and was at the time in Sommershausen Castle . It contained, among other things, around 12,500 eggs and 340 birds, numerous snails and mussel shells, his herbarium, as well as minerals, rocks and fossils.

His parents were the royal Württemberg chamberlain Friedrich August Karl von König-Warthausen (1800–1889), brother of Wilhelm von König-Warthausen (1793–1879), and Pauline Lembke (1805–1872). On June 25, 1861 Richard von König-Warthausen married Elisabeth von Hügel (1838–1938) in Hochberg and they had five children together, of which we should mention: Friedrich Carl Wilhelm (called Baron Fritz, 1863–1948), father of Friedrich Karl von Koenig-Warthausen (1906–1986), and Maria Regina (1865–1934), wife of the chemist Friedrich Hauff (1863–1935).
