Richibucto is a city in the Canadian province of New Brunswick / Nouveau-Brunswick with 1985 inhabitants in 2011.

geography

Richibucto is located in Kent County at the southern tip of Kouchibouguac National Park and just before the mouth of the Richibucto in the Northumberland Strait . Miramichi is located around 60 km to the northwest . Bouctouche in the southeast and Moncton in the south are 25 and 65 kilometers away. The connecting road New Brunswick Route 11 touches Richibucto in the west.

history

The name of the place comes from the Mi'kmaq and means "fiery river" (English: river of fire ). The first European settlers were Acadians and English , who were mainly involved in building ships. A lighthouse was built in 1865 . Between 1883 and 1984 a railway line operated the Kent Northern Railway to Kent Junction .

Today is the catch of lobsters ( lobster ) and scallops ( Scallops ) in each season an important sector. Every year in July there is a Scallop Festival . The city is also active in tourism and has a marina .
