Rykle Borger

Rykle Borger (also Riekele Borger , born May 24, 1929 in Wieuwerd, municipality of Littenseradiel , Friesland ; † December 27, 2010 in Göttingen ) was a German Assyriologist of Dutch origin who was professor of ancient oriental studies at the University of Göttingen from 1962 to 1997 .

Life

After graduating from high school in Breda , Borger studied Oriental Studies and Evangelical Theology at the University of Leiden from 1946 . After completing a Rigorosum in Oriental Studies (1951) and Theology (1952) and completing his doctorate in Leiden, Borger worked as a research assistant at the University of Göttingen (1954–1955) and at the University of Vienna (1955–1957). In 1958 he returned to Göttingen as a lecturer in Assyriology and completed his habilitation in 1959 with Wolfram von Soden . Borger then worked as a lecturer at the Göttingen seminar for cuneiform script research until he was given a full professorship for ancient oriental studies with a focus on Assyriology there in 1962. Since 1978 he was a full member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen .

In December 2009, Borger successfully applied for German citizenship at the age of 80 (after 53 years in Germany).

Borgers research focus included the edition of Assyrian texts, biblical philology as well as text bibliography, grammatology (scripture theory) and lexicography . Among other things, he wrote the Handbook of Cuneiform Literature (Göttingen 1967).
