The giant hut is an alpine club hut of the Oberland section of the German Alpine Club at 1345 m above sea level. NN height on the Riesenalm below the Hochries . It is located in the Chiemgau Alps in the municipality of Aschau im Chiemgau in the Upper Bavarian district of Rosenheim .
history
In the work area of the Prien section of the DuOeAV , the Oberland section initially wanted to convert an existing alpine hut into a giant hut. This project was rejected after closer examination. Instead, the giant hut was rebuilt in 1913. The inauguration of the hut took place on December 7, 1913.
The Riesenhütte is an easily accessible excursion destination all year round and a popular rest stop on the long way from Frasdorf or Aschau to the Hochries. In winter, the mostly avalanche-proof environment is ideal for easy ski tours and snowshoe hikes. For mountaineers, the Riesenhütte is a possible base on larger tours through the Chiemgau Alps and on the long-distance Königssee-Bodensee hiking trail, the Maximiliansweg . The well-known ridge hike to the Spitzstein begins here . In the vicinity of the hut there are also some easily navigable karst caves . The giant hut has been closed since autumn 2013 until further notice.
