The Rifugio Città di Vigevano was a refuge of the Vigevano section of the Italian Alpine Club CAI in the Monte Rosa massif in the province of Vercelli . It had 80 beds and has been closed since 2012.
location
The hut is located in the municipality of Alagna Valsesia east of the Col d'Olen at 2864 m slm in the ski area of Gressoney and Alagna.
history
The refuge was opened under the name Albergo Stolemberg in 1914. In 1946 it became the property of the Vigevano section of the Italian Alpine Club CAI and was renamed the Rifugio Città di Vigevano. The hut was an important base on the normal route to Monte Rosa. With the expansion of the ski areas of Gressoney and Alagna, it slowly lost its importance as a mountain hut and was used as a ski hut, especially in winter. In 2002 it was leased to the Varallo Sesia section of the CAI and the building was adapted to the new requirements. After the introduction of new safety standards and hygiene regulations by the region, which would have meant a considerable financial expense for the section, the Rifugio was sold and closed in 2012. In 2016, the state government of the Piedmont region decided that the building should be renovated and that it could then be used for tourist purposes.
Access
The former refuge can be reached in about 10 minutes on foot from Passo dei Salati , where the Gressoney-La-Trinité and Alagna Valsesia cable cars arrive.
