The hut is located east of the summit of Monte Portella just below the summit ridge not far from the border between the provinces of L'Aquila and Teramo in the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park at 2388  m slm . To the southeast is the winter sports area of Campo Imperatore , which can be seen from the hut. The Sentiero Italia long-distance hiking trail leads past the Rifugio Duca degli Abruzzi .

history

The Rifugio Duca degli Aburzzi was opened in 1908 by the CAI Section Rome after the location of the Rifugio Garibaldi, which was built twenty years earlier and not far away, had proven to be prone to snow. The windy ridge of Monte Portella, on which no snow could accumulate, was therefore the ideal location, even if the construction required a particularly robust construction. The new rifugio was named in honor of the Duke of Abruzzo and explorer Luigi Amedeo di Savoia-Aosta . At the inauguration on June 28, 1908, the Duke was not present for scheduling reasons, but among the 30 invited guests was Prince Karl Anton von Hohenzollern , who gave a short speech. The delegation of the CAI, which started the day before from Rome, was led by the deputy and vice-president of the Rome section, Attilio Brunialti . In 1934 the hut was expanded. The opening of the Hotel Campo Imperatore, which is only about 40 minutes' walk away, in the same year led to a decline in visitors and, as a result, to the decline of the refuge. During the Second World War, the run down hut was used for military purposes. After the war, the Rifugio Duca degli Abruzzi was modernized several times and completely renovated between 2018 and 2019.
