history

The Rifugio Garibaldi was ceremoniously opened in September 1886 and was the cornerstone for the mountaineering and tourist development of the Gran Sasso. The simple two-room hut built by the CAI Section Rome from 15 cm thick stone slabs and cement was not only the first refuge on the Gran Sasso, but the first ever refuge in the Apennines . After the location was determined in 1884, the hut was completed in two years with great logistical difficulties. In retrospect, the chosen location turned out to be unfortunate, as it was located in a hollow under snow until early summer and not only limited access to the hut, but also affected the hut due to the snow. With the construction of the new Rifugio Duca degli Abruzzi not far away in 1908, the Rifugio Garibaldi soon lost its importance and became increasingly neglected. In 1924 the management of the hut was handed over to the L'Aquila Section, which had it restored. With the construction of the first tourist facilities for winter sports in Campo Imperatore at the beginning of the 1930s, the Albergo Campo Imperatore, from which Mussolini was later to be liberated, and a first ski lift , a new phase of decline began. Over the years, the rifugio was only used sporadically and more or less left to its fate. In 1977 the hut became the property of the L'Aquila Section, which renovated the dilapidated building in 1978 and reopened it.
