Changes

After the 2011/12 season, KSK Konkordia Neuss and RV Thalheim withdrew from the 1st Bundesliga. The DRB reacted with a change in the season. The teams competed in a southern and a northern relay in 2012/13 and not, as before, in a western and an eastern relay. Eight teams were assigned to both relays.

After the end of the fighting in the relay round, the third to sixth placed teams of both relays competed against each other in an intermediate round. Then the two first-placed teams of the two seasons joined in the quarter-finals.

The eighth place in both seasons relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga.
