Rise -

Rise is the title of the second solo album by the American singer , guitarist and songwriter Tom Keifer , released on September 13, 2019 . It belongs to the genre of blues rock .

background

Keifer had released his solo album The Way Life Goes in 2013 , which he had been working on since 1997 and the recording of which had been repeatedly delayed, mainly for health reasons. The reviewers of various trade magazines praised the album and attested it an "almost consistently enormous quality level" ( Rocks ), it offered "Rock'n'Roll, strongly associated with the old Rolling Stones, with intertwined blues and country elements."

The blues influence already known from Cinderella was joined by, according to Rock Hard , this time "not only hard rock , but also soul , gospel and country influences", which invite you to a "stylistic voyage of discovery par excellence". Some of the things on this album "couldn't have done better by even the Rolling Stones", the "crisp opener" Solid Ground or the hook monster A Different Light screamed "almost for airplay," whereby "the latter number in particular has what it takes to be a (country) hit" have.

On October 20, 2017 as published Deluxe Edition designated new edition of the album with Cleopatra Records. The tours that Keifer did with the album ended on November 10, 2018 with a concert in Miramar ( Florida ).

Then began recording the new album, for which Keifer and his wife Savannah wrote almost all the songs alone. For the title Rise they received compositional support from the country duo Thompson Square from Nashville. The musicians included Savannah Keifer ( vocals ), Tony Higbee ( lead guitar ), Billy Mercer ( electric bass ), Kendra Chantelle ( percussion ), Jarred Pope ( drums ) and Kory Myers ( keyboards ).

Rise was released on CD , LP, and online music services on September 13, 2019 . As singles were The Death of Me (31 June 2019) Touching the Divine (4 September 2019), Rise (16 September 2019) and Waiting on the Demons (22 October 2019) decoupled. Music videos were produced for all four titles, Touching the Divine is a lyric video.

Keifer explained that a permanent band had established itself on the previous tours, so that he actually regards the album as a joint work. He made this clear, among other things, with the words "tom # keiferband" on the cover of the album.

“When this band came together, we all felt a bit like broken souls, each with our own unique story. If you ask anyone in the band, they would all say this band came along at just the right time. Every human who walks this planet faces challenges and extreme adversity they have to overcome. As a band, we feel fortunate to be able to face those things together. There is a piece of every band member in the 'The Death of Me' as well as throughout the entire Rise album. "

“When this band got together, we all felt a bit like broken souls, each with their own unique story. If you ask anyone in the band they would all say this band got together at just the right time. All people on this planet face challenges and extreme adversities that they must overcome. As a band, we feel lucky that we can do things like this together. It's a piece of every band member in The Death of Me, but also on the entire album Rise "

reception

Tom Keifer sees himself “no longer as a solo artist,” says Martin Römpp in Rocks , and that may explain “the harder and more rocking orientation” of the material, which brings back “memories of Cinderella”. Römpp regrets that Keifer seems to have lost his “feel for gripping melodies”, because “classic hits” cannot be found on Rise . The numbers on the album are "often cumbersome," and it is "once again the quiet moments" that know how to captivate, while the rest of the material "doesn't ignite despite the heavy use of guitars". Because of his many vocal cord operations, Keifer could not be “blamed” for “not being able to build on his heyday vocally”, but his performance still contributed to the “ambivalent overall impression”. Römpp awarded six out of a possible ten points.
