Rising Star was a German singing casting show that was broadcast on RTL television in August and September 2014 . It was based on the Israeli original HaKokhav HaBa (translated: "The next star") from keshet Broadcasting Ltd. The viewers were able to vote via app during the live performances of the individual participants . In 2014, offshoots were produced in eight other countries besides Germany. The German version was terminated earlier than planned by RTL due to low ratings. The winner was the band "Unknown Passenger".

Concept and process

Rising Star is a singing casting show where viewers can vote via app .

In the four-person jury that judges the performances, each juror has a voting weight of 5%, the audience votes have a weight of 80%. In all rounds, each candidate begins his appearance behind a large LED wall, the so-called "wall". The pictures of the viewers who have previously registered in the app and rated the candidate with a positive vote appear on the wall. Once the vote has reached 75% positive votes, the wall rises and the candidate is in the next round.

The so-called “Hot Seat Shows” were planned as the second round. In the only show carried out this round, four candidates out of nine candidates advanced. As in the auditions, 75% positive votes were needed to lift the “wall” and thus make it onto the shortlist. The four candidates with the highest percentage of votes qualified for the final.

Due to the shortening of the season, only one of three planned "Hot Seat Shows" took place in the first season.

In the final stood the four candidates who qualified through the “Hot Seat Show”, as well as the remaining 17 candidates who actually qualified for the “Hot Seat Shows” through the auditions.

In the final, each candidate must have a share of 75% of the vote and the result of the best candidate up to that point in order to raise the wall. The winner of the Rising Star and the winner of the music scholarship is the candidate with the highest positive percentage of votes.

Season 1 (2014)

The first season was moderated by Rainer Maria Jilg and ran between August 28 and September 18, 2014 in the main RTL program. The expert jury consisted of the pop singer Anastacia , the reggae musician Gentleman , the soul and R&B singer Joy Denalane and the singer Sasha .

Due to the rate development, RTL announced on September 14, 2014 that it would end the format early. RTL spokesman Christian Körner said they wanted to do justice to the talents in the competition, but also to the clear vote of the viewers and the concept itself in the remaining time. On September 15, it was announced that there would be a four-hour final on September 18, 2014. The free slots would be filled with feature films. The season winner was the band Unknown Passenger with 92.77% of the vote. Just three months after the victory, the group announced their breakup.

Reviews

The reviews were mostly negative. The only plus point for the show was the stage backdrop and the LED wall. The much too long introductory films were particularly criticized.

David Denk from the Süddeutsche Zeitung said that “in view of all the advance praise for Rising Star , the hype about this supposedly groundbreaking format, the premiere was rather sobering.” He also found that the candidates were neither “better than competing formats like The Voice of Germany or earlier X Factor are - quite the contrary - the (emotional) added value of app voting was immediately apparent - except for people who have always wanted to see their Facebook picture on TV. "

Julian Miller from the media magazinequotemeter.de also judged that Rising Star was "so pompous and yet so dreary". Above all, he criticizes the fact that "out of nine acts (...) maybe one or two tore off the stool". Overall, he judges that “ not much remains of the promised casting innovation at Rising Star ”.

Stefan Düsterheit from the Express also found positive things in the TV show. He judges that the show “makes you want to look for talent on television, which has meanwhile been exhausted,” and thus “well-produced hands-on television with candidates with potential, great pictures and excitement”. Darkness criticizes, however, that the show could be a bit “more compact and less lengthy”.

In the second edition, several candidates criticized the fact that the song they performed was not chosen by them, but determined by RTL. Thereupon juror Anastacia intervened and asked more directly. Moderator Jilg tried to straighten the situation, whereupon he announced that the candidates would be supported by musical coaches. The last couple of candidates of the evening said that they would have been surprised by the song selection themselves. The situation led to discussions on social networks during and after the broadcast. RTL announced on Facebook: “The talents make suggestions themselves or they get song suggestions. In the end, only they make the decisions. "

Peer Schader from DWDL.de ruled on September 13th that the show was in many ways exactly what live television should be, but that the viewers were too impatient.
