Rita Marko

Rita Marko (* 1920 in Korça ; † June 15, 2018 ) was an Albanian politician of the Party of Labor of Albania .

Life

Rita Marko, who comes from a Greek Orthodox family, was already actively involved in the nationalist movement in the fight against Ahmet Zogu's corrupt regime, which was increasingly coming under Italian influence, after attending secondary school in 1936 . He took part in a strike in Korça that year and later joined the communist resistance. During the Second World War he took part in the communist anti-fascist war of independence from 1942 to 1944 and was political commissar of the police from 1944 to 1948 .

At the 1st party congress of the PPSh in November 1948 he was elected secretary of the Central Committee and held this position until November 1966. In July 1950 he was briefly Minister of Industry.

In 1950 he became a member of the People's Assembly ( Kuvendi Popullor ) for the first time and was a member of this as a representative of the Korça district from the second to the end of the eleventh electoral term in 1991.

At the 2nd party congress in April 1952 he was elected as a candidate for the Politburo, before he was finally elected a member of the Politburo at the 3rd party congress in June 1956 and held this position until he left in July 1990. He was one of the longest serving members of this highest governing body of the party.

Between 1956 and 1958 he was chairman of the people's assembly and thus parliamentary president . He then acted between 1958 and January 1977 as Deputy President of Parliament and as a member of the Presidium of the People's Assembly, the collective State Presidium.

In April 1957, he was part of a delegation on a state visit to the Soviet Union that dealt with Albanian-Soviet relations, alongside Enver Hoxha , Mehmet Shehu , Gogo Nushi , Xhafer Spahiu , Ramiz Alia , Spiro Koleka and Behar Shtylla .

After leaving the Central Committee Secretariat in November 1966, he was the first secretary of the PPSh in the Durrës district , one of the Albanian districts with the highest population density.

After the death of Gogo Nushi in April 1970 he became chairman of the general council of the trade union federation BSSH ( Bashkimi Sindikal i Shqipërisë ). In 1982 he was succeeded by Sotir Koçollari . At the 9th Congress of the Trade Union Federation in June 1982 he criticized the policy of the SFR Yugoslavia in Kosovo , but also the situation in Poland .

Most recently he was Deputy Chairman of the Presidium of the People's Assembly and thus one of the Vice-Presidents and representatives of Ramiz Alia alongside Xhafer Spahiu and Emine Guri .

On December 5, 1990, he was arrested on charges of corruption .
