The Rivière Ashuapmushuan is a river in the administrative region Saguenay – Lac-Saint-Jean in the Canadian province of Québec .

It has its origin in Lac Ashuapmushuan . It first flows in a north-easterly direction for 30 km, then turns south-east and reaches the city of Saint-Félicien . There it flows - after Rivière Péribonka and Rivière Mistassini - as the third largest tributary into Lac Saint-Jean . The river length is 181 km, according to other sources 266 km (source rivers included here).

The typical summer median runoff varies between 200 and 300 m³ / s, while runoffs of 1050 m³ / s are reached during the spring snowmelt. Maximum discharges of 2400 m³ / s are also measured. The lowest discharge rates occur in March - with a long-term mean of 75 m³ / s, a mean monthly minimum of 54 and a mean monthly maximum of 120 m³ / s.

The Rivière Ashuapmushuan forms the northern border of the Réserve faunique Ashuapmushuan . As a wild, untamed river and easily accessible from Route 167 near Lac Ashuapmushuan, it is a popular destination for canoe tourists.

A 276.6 km² large aquatic reserve is being planned, which would extend over a flowing stretch of 126 km of the Rivière Ashuapmushuan. This would also include the river plain and the adjacent mountain slopes. Logging, mining and hydropower would then be prohibited in this area. The salmon stocks in the river, fauna and flora as well as archaeological sites would benefit from such a protected area.
