The Rivière aux Feuilles ( English Leaf River ; Inuktitut : Kuugaaluk ("the great river") or Itinniq ("where there are spring tides ")) is a river in northern Québec in Canada on the northern tree line .
It flows from Lake Minto northeast through the Ungava Peninsula to Leaf Bay and Ungava Bay . He covers a distance of 480 km. The Inuit community of Tasiujaq is located at its confluence with Leaf Bay . The estuary of the Rivière aux Feuilles is known for its tidal range of 18 m, one of the highest in the world.
The barn -ground caribou herd named after the river is one of the largest in the world with around 500,000 individuals.
It is possible to canoe along the entire length of the river (with caution) without having to bypass sections. There are no impassable waterfalls or whitewater sections along its course . The length of the river measured from Charpentier Bay to Tasiujaq is 320 km.
The ice-free period of the Rivière aux Feuilles is short and only lasts 60 days. This implies a low average daytime temperature in summer (around 10 ° C) typically combined with rain (or snow ) and wind . These weather conditions favor hypothermia .

history
The river has been known under the English name Leaf River since the end of the 19th century at the latest . The name is possibly derived from the vegetation ( arctic willow and birch ) along the river. The Hudson's Bay Company hunted salmon and porpoises in the region and set up a trading post at the mouth of the river around 1905. At the beginning of the 20th century, the river was given the French name Rivière des Feuilles , which was converted to Rivière aux Feuilles in 1925 .
