The Rivière des Escoumins is a 84 km long river in the administrative region of Côte-Nord in the eastern part of the Canadian province of Québec .

River course

The Rivière des Escoumins flows through the south of the MRC La Haute-Côte-Nord . It has its origin in the 594  m high lake Lac à l'Orignal . The lake Lac des Cœurs lies on the upper reaches . At river kilometer 67, the Rivière des Escoumins is dammed from the Barrage Gorgotton to Lac Gorgotton . The river initially flows south, later south-south-east and finally in south-east. The Rivière des Escoumins finally flows into the Baie des Escoumins , a small bay on the northern edge of the estuary of the Saint Lawrence River, at Les Escoumins , 38 km northeast of Tadoussac . The Route 138 crosses the flow immediately above the mouth thereof.

Hydrology

The Rivière des Escoumins drains an area of ​​800 km². The mean discharge at the gauge 9 km above the mouth is 15.6 m³ / s. The river usually carries the largest amount of water in May with an average of 62.2 m³ / s.

Fish fauna

The salmon population in the river system is considered safe.
