The Rivière du Petit Mécatina (in Newfoundland and Labrador : Little Mecatina River ) is a river whose lower course runs in the administrative region of Côte-Nord in the Canadian province of Québec .
River course
The upper reaches of the river is located in a disputed area between Québec and Newfoundland and Labrador, which was awarded to Newfoundland and Labrador in 1927. It flows into the Gulf of St. Lawrence near Tête-à-la-Baleine , a settlement in Basse-Côte-Nord about 400 km east of Sept-Îles .
The river has a length of 451 km. It has its origin east of the lake Lac Aticonac on the plateau of the Labrador Peninsula near the watershed between the Atlantic and the St. Lawrence River or St. Lawrence Gulf . From its source it flows in a south-easterly direction to later turn south and flow into the Saint Lawrence Gulf. 15 km above the mouth, a western branch of the river splits off from the main river. This western branch of the estuary, the Rivière Nétagamiou , flows 23 km south and flows into the Gulf of Saint Lawrence at the Chevery settlement .
