Geographical location
The Roßberg is an elevation on the southeast edge of Roßdorf and belongs to the Reinheimer Hügelland .
A basalt quarry occupies the center and the north of the Roßberg . Partial areas on the south-east slope belong to the Natura2000 area "Forest and Magerrasen bei Roßdorf" (FFH area 6118-305).
Description and history
The Roßberg was created around 42 million years ago through volcanic eruptions. In 1776, basalt mining began in several places. Industrial dismantling began in 1885 by the Breitwieser company. The originally symmetrical shape of the extinct volcano was greatly changed by the opencast mining. The quarry crater is around 120 meters deep today. The water in the retention basin is colored turquoise green by green algae . In addition to basalt, various minerals are also found in the quarry, e.g. B. Gonnardit , Haüyn and white zeolites .
