The non-profit foundation operates on the basis of the foundation capital of 150,000 euros, one third of which is borne by the founding parties. In addition, the RES is mainly financed by donations and endowments. At the request of Teresa Enke, the foundation is also committed to helping children with heart disease and their parents.

The purpose of the foundation is to promote measures and institutions that serve to provide information about depression or children's heart disease and / or to research or treat these diseases.

The purpose of the foundation is to be achieved in particular through:

  • Funding of studies, projects and other measures that deal with depression and children's heart diseases
  • Promotion and implementation of events and projects such as conferences, symposia, discussions, lectures, seminars etc. on the aforementioned diseases or the awarding of promotional prizes
  • Support of institutions that serve the aforementioned tasks

The foundation is allowed to undertake all business that is conducive to achieving and promoting the purpose of the articles of association and is permissible under charitable law.

Promotional activities

With regard to its work in the field of depression, the foundation differentiates between the “competitive sport” sector and the “widespread disease depression”. In the area of children's heart disease, the first step is to identify structural improvement options through pilot projects. In addition, the RES works both as an operational foundation that pursues its goals with self-initiated projects, and as a sponsoring foundation that enables outsiders to contact the foundation with project inquiries that are directly related to the foundation's purposes to receive financial support for the implementation of the project.

Mentally strengthened

The foundation acts as the main financier of the “MentalGestärkt” initiative, the main component of which is the creation of a coordination office set up at the Cologne Sports University . In addition to the funding activity under the financial aspect, the RES was a decisive initiator in the run-up to bringing together psychiatrists and psychotherapists as well as psychologists who are now working together on the content of this project. By March 31, 2013, the following goals and tasks of this contact point for mentally ill competitive athletes were largely implemented:

  • Linking existing information and offers as well as providing a mediation and service offer for athletes or trainers seeking help
  • Development of practical recommendations and guidelines for the training of young athletes
  • Sports psychological support work as well as the dissemination of sports psychiatric and psychotherapeutic treatment offers in competitive sports
  • Mediation of resources and psychological skills in order to be able to deal better with stress and performance requirements to young talents and young professionals through suitable measures

Due to the development of the “Sports Psychiatry / Psychotherapy” unit, the restructuring of the “MentalGestärkt” initiative on April 1, 2013 was decided at a board meeting. In the future, "MentalGestärkt" will be dedicated exclusively to the prevention / psychoeducation of young athletes and the mediation of sports psychological support, while the therapeutic component, which was originally part of this project, is now attached to the "mental health advice hotline" installed by the foundation in November 2012 .

Sport Psychiatry / Psychotherapy Unit

The “Sports Psychiatry and Psychotherapy” unit was founded in 2010. The background to this is that German psychiatry and psychotherapy has hardly dealt with mental illnesses in competitive athletes in the last few decades: This applies to clinical care, psychosocial and biological research, training, and advanced training.

Focus of the presentation:

  • Establishment of a network of treating psychiatrists and psychotherapists in an outpatient and inpatient setting
  • Quality assurance of the relevant clinical work
  • Organization of events
  • Research in the field of sports psychiatry including health services research and neurobiological research

For its innovative work in this area, the project was recognized by the “Germany - Land of Ideas” initiative as a “Selected Location 2012” on November 6, 2012 in Aachen. In doing so, the initiative paid tribute to the establishment of a qualified network of psychiatrists and psychotherapists, in the course of which diseased competitive athletes can, among other things, seek treatment at ten university clinics throughout Germany as part of the DGPPN consultation hour “Mental Health in Sport”.

Mental health advice hotline

Due to the fact that numerous affected persons or their relatives still turn to the RES for help, the foundation set up the “mental health counseling hotline” in November 2012 in cooperation with the Aachen University Hospital , which is looked after by a psychiatrist or neurologist for six hours on weekdays becomes. In this way, the foundation guarantees a direct and, in particular, qualified initial contact. In addition, the callers receive further information such as the names of specialized institutions and the reference to the guide on depression in sport published for those affected and their relatives, with a detailed service section and answers to frequently asked questions.

Active from the low mood

With regard to the research and ultimately also the treatment of this disease, the Robert Enke Foundation sponsored the project “Active out of the mood” in 2012. In the course of this sports project, psychiatrists from the Hannover Medical School (MHH) clinic for psychiatry, social psychiatry and psychotherapy as well as sports scientists from the University of Würzburg / Marburg developed a training program for people suffering from depression who had little or no previous experience in sports. It was the approach of the scientists to find out in a study the exact effects of regular exercise on therapy. In detail, it was necessary to determine the type of sport and training intensity that are particularly suitable for accompanying therapy for depression, in order to ultimately present a proven training module that can also be used in other clinics, sports clubs and health facilities. The project, which is 100% supported by RES, received, among other things, the “Golden Star of Sports” award from the German Olympic Sports Confederation ( DOSB ), which was presented in January 2013 in Berlin by Federal President Joachim Gauck .

Robert Enke Foundation on tour

The self-initiated project "Robert Enke Foundation on Tour" has been carried out since the 2011/12 Bundesliga season. The aim here is to use a mobile information platform to achieve the foundation's goals, primarily removing taboos on the subject of depression, through a presence in the stadiums of the clubs from the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga. This can be used to draw the attention of tens of thousands of people to the topic on a matchday. In the meantime, this project is also invited to match days in the German handball league or health days at universities and public offices.

Social media as an education platform

Via the social media platform Facebook , the RES and 140,000 friends now conduct an important part of their educational work in order to be able to achieve the foundation's goal of removing taboos from the disease depression. New projects are presented, events announced and links to reports from the Robert Enke Foundation and its partners are published. In addition, the level of awareness is to be steadily increased by linking to the Facebook profiles of other well-known clubs and organizations. For example, the event "ROBERT GedENKEn", on the occasion of the third anniversary of Robert Enke's death, reached over 2.5 million people. This makes it one of the most viral events that has ever been placed on the social media platform Facebook.

Psychological support for parents of children with heart disease

The RES supports the Hannover Medical School (MHH) in the field of children's heart diseases. In addition to promoting projects and studies, this involves looking after parents of children with heart disease in the MHH clinic.

The primary aim is to provide psychological support for individual family members or the whole family through the professional care of a psychologist. For this purpose, a consultation hour was set up in the children's clinic of the MHH, in which relaxation exercises are offered in addition to the opportunity to talk.

"No stress with stress" / practical guide "Mental health in competitive (competitive) sport"

The Robert Enke Foundation, the German Football Association (DFB), the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs (BMAS), the “MentalGestärkt” initiative (Sport University Cologne) and the VBG ( Administrative Professional Association ) have in common as part of the adoption of the national football team for the World Cup in Brazil presented the newly developed practical guide "Mental health in competitive (competitive) sport".

The practice folder is an important and practical aid to educate coaches, doctors, sports psychologists and officials about mental illnesses and to show them ways to support affected athletes. In addition, the athlete's immediate environment receives valuable information on how to master the everyday psychological pressure situations that every athlete encounters: the tension of a competition, public criticism or the difficulty of reconciling sport and professional training. With this, a product was made available to the athletes in the field of prevention, with the help of which, among other things, techniques and strategies are taught to minimize the occurrence of a mental illness in the best case prophylactically.

Even small, easy-to-implement measures can make a big difference. At the end of each chapter of the practical guide, there are practical tips and solutions to try out. All chapters contain interviews with players from the field of competitive sports, including Hans-Dieter Hermann, sports psychologist for the German national soccer team , Fabian Hambüchen, Olympic participant and world champion in artistic gymnastics, and Bundesliga keeper Markus Miller from Hannover 96.

The practical guide can be ordered free of charge from the Robert Enke Foundation by email or downloaded from the psyGA homepage.

Events

Event series "GedENKEn Robert - our friend and goalkeeper"

On the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the death of the former German national player and goalkeeper of Hannover 96, Robert Enke, the Robert Enke Foundation, in cooperation with the Landesmuseum Hannover, is organizing a five-day educational and commemorative exhibition, which took place from November 7th to 11th, 2014. In total, over 6,500 visitors streamed into the museum over the five days of the event.

The centerpiece of the series of events was a souvenir exhibition with unique exhibits such as jerseys from Robert Enkes's stations at Hannover 96, Benfica Lisbon, FC Barcelona or the German national soccer team. At the same time, with the help of the interactive exhibition “EXPERIENCE LIMITS”, many non-affected people could understand what it means to suffer from a mental illness. Apart from the usual multipliers, “EXPERIENCE BORDERS” informs and demystifies through experience and self-awareness, through active discussion - a completely different form of information and education about mental illnesses. "EXPERIENCE BORDERS" is based at its heart of two rooms, which are closed and separated from each other by means of various stimuli (acoustic, visual, tactile and social) convey an authentic impression of how depression and schizophrenia "feel". As a world of experience and adventure, it is aimed at the general population not affected, whether a specialist audience or an interested layperson, whether young or old.

The exhibitions were supplemented by two panel discussions entitled “Depression, a common disease” and “Robert Enke - our friend and goalkeeper”. On November 7, 2014, Teresa Enke stepped onto the stage together with the Federal Minister of Defense, Ursula von der Leyen, and Petra Garlipp, Senior Physician at the Clinic for Psychiatry, Social Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at the Medical University of Hanover, discussing the subject of "depression, a widespread disease" , socio-political and the point of view of a relative. On November 11, 2014, three former companions - Jupp Heynckes, Marco Villa and biographer Ronald Reng (moderation) - reported on their time together with the eight-time German national player.

Cooperation partner

At the first operational meeting on April 15, 2010, three permanent cooperation partners were selected. There is now close cooperation on a regional basis with the “Alliance against Depression in the Hanover Region”. The Robert Enke Foundation works nationwide with the "DGPPN", the German Society for Psychiatry, Psychotherapy and Neurology. Finally, the Robert Enke Foundation supports the Hannover Medical School (MHH) in the area of children's heart diseases.
