Robert Guy Bathurst (born February 22, 1957 in Accra on the Gold Coast , British West Africa ) is a British actor .

Life and accomplishments

Bathurst was born in 1957 in the former Gold Coast colony (now Ghana ) to Philip and Gillian Bathurst, where his father worked as an administrative advisor. He has two other siblings. In 1959 the family moved to Dublin , Ireland, where Bathurst and his brother attended church boarding school. In 1966 the family moved to England, where Bathurst attended the Worth School in West Sussex , where they gained their first acting experience. At the age of 18, he studied at the University of Cambridge and also became a member of the Footlights theater company , which also included other famous actors such as Hugh Laurie and Emma Thompson .

After graduating from university, he worked full time as an actor and toured Australia with the Footlights for a year. His first performance outside of the group was as a speaking role on BBC Radio 4 . He had his first television role in 1982 in the pilot of the series Blackadder as Prince Harry . He made his debut as a real theater actor in 1983 in the play Noises Off by Michael Frayn , which in the Savoy Theater was performed. He then acted as an active actor in the theater for a year and also worked as a presenter for BBC East. In 1984 he also appeared at the National Theater in the play Saint Joan .

Bathurst was in 1986 after Roger Moore a candidate for the role of the new James Bond in The Living Daylights , but could not prevail against Timothy Dalton , who received the role last. Therefore he continued his work as a television actor and played a. a. 1987 in the series Red Dwarf . In 1996 he played one of the bigger roles in the series Cold Feet and in 2002 was able to take on the lead role of Minister Michael Phillips in the BBC production My Dad's the Prime Minister . After that he played in the theater again for a while and was e.g. B. seen in Three Sisters at the side of Kristin Scott Thomas .

Since 2005, Bathurst was also increasingly seen in movies and starred in a television adaptation of Heidi the Lord Sesseman and 2006 in Thief Lord the role of strict father of the title character. In 2006 he also featured in the television movie Coup! and the play Whipping It Up each has one of the leading roles. This was followed in 2009 by the literary film adaptation Emma , in which he played the role of Mr. Weston , and in 2010 the multi-part television series The Pillars of the Earth , where he was seen as the schemer Percy Hamleigh . From 2010 to 2012 he appeared in six episodes of the acclaimed television series Downton Abbey as the landowner Sir Anthony Strallan .

Bathurst has been married since 1985 and has four children.
