Robert Brown Gardner (born February 27, 1939 in Tarrytown , New York , † May 5, 1998 ) was an American mathematician.

Gardner studied at Princeton University with a bachelor's degree in 1959, at Columbia University with a master's degree in 1960 and received his doctorate in 1965 at the University of California, Berkeley with SS Chern (differential geometric methods in partial differential equations). As a post-doctoral student he was at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences of New York University and in 1967 Assistant Professor at Columbia University. In 1971 he became Associate Professor and 1977 Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill .

In 1970/71 he was at the Institute for Advanced Study . He was also at MSRI , the Fields Institute and visiting professor at the TU Berlin (1970, 1988) and the University of Bonn.

He dealt with differential geometry in the successor of Élie Cartan , for example systems of external differential forms , their equivalence theory or their Repére Mobile (English moving frame ) method, with geometric theory of partial differential equations , the calculus of variations , submanifolds and integral geometry , invariant theory , control theory , geometric methods of Image analysis and Lie groups .

Robert L. Bryant is one of his PhD students .
