Robert C. Allen (born January 10, 1947 in Salem, Massachusett ) is a historian and university professor with Canadian, US and British citizenship . He is Professor of Economic History at the University of Oxford and a Fellow Emeritus at Nuffield College . His research interests include a. the history of economic growth and inequality, technological change, public policy , as well as environmental and agricultural history .

academic career

Allen received his bachelor's degree from Carleton College , Minnesota in 1969 . He then moved to Harvard University , where he received his MA in 1972 and his Ph.D. in 1975. acquired. In 1973 he became an assistant professor, initially teaching at Hamilton College and from 1975 at the University of British Columbia . There he was full professor from 1985 to 2000. He has been at Oxford University since 2000, where he became Professor of Economic History in 2002.

He received several prizes for his work. a. Honored with the Ranki Prize of the Economic History Association for his books Enclosure and the Yeoman: The Agricultural Development of the South Midlands, 1450-1850 and Farm to Factory: A Re-interpretation of the Soviet Industrial Revolution . His 2009 monograph The British Industrial Revolution in Global Perspective was named Book of the Year by The Economist and Times Literary Supplement . In 2003, Allen was accepted into the British Academy .
