The Sankt Oliver Church is the Catholic church in Altenau , a district of the mountain town of Clausthal-Zellerfeld in the Goslar district in Lower Saxony . As a branch church, it belongs to the parish " St. Nikolaus " with its seat in Clausthal-Zellerfeld, in the Nörten- Osterode deanery of the Hildesheim diocese . The church named after St. Oliver Plunkett is located at Stettiner Straße 5.

history

In the 16th century the population in the Harz became Evangelical Lutheran with the introduction of the Reformation .

As a result of the Second World War , the number of Catholics in the Harz increased due to the influx of refugees and displaced persons from the eastern regions of the German Empire . Initially, the Catholics in Altenau belonged to the parish in Clausthal-Zellerfeld. In the summer, Catholic services were held in the old elementary school on Marktstrasse.

From 1970 to 1972, the "Glockenberg Holiday Park" was built on the Glockenberg above the center of Altenau. On May 27, 1978 the foundation stone for the church building was laid on the western edge of the holiday park by Vicar General Adalbert Sendker (1912–1993), and on October 27, 1979, the benediction by Bishop Heinrich Maria Janssen followed . The church was after St. Oliver (Laatzen) (1975-77) and St. Oliver (Rhüden) (1976) the third and last church in the diocese of Hildesheim, which was named after Oliver Plunkett, who was canonized in 1975 .

Since March 1, 2004, the church has belonged to the then newly founded Nörten-Osterode deanery, previously it belonged to the Osterode deanery.

Architecture and equipment

The church, about 506 meters above sea level , with its free-standing bell tower was built according to plans by the Brunswick architect Wolfgang Tschirschwitz . The three bells were cast by Petit & Gebr. Edelbrock in 1978 and are known after the Holy Spirit and Saints Maria and Oliver.

The stained glass windows were designed by Claus Kilian and executed by Wilhelm Derix IV. From Taunusstein . Kilian also designed the interior. The interior is closed off by a wooden ceiling, the tabernacle is embedded in a wall niche. A hanging cross is placed above the altar , which contains relics of Saints Donatus , Faustinus, Oliver and Romanus. 14 Stations of the Cross , cast from bronze by Walter Mellmann, hang on the side walls . A 15th, larger station represents the resurrection of Jesus Christ . A painting , a copy of a work from the National Portrait Gallery (London) , shows St. Oliver. The interior of the church also includes a two-manual pipe organ with 10 registers , which was expanded by master organ builder Blöß from Oker . The Pietà was made after an original from around 1200, which belongs to a chapel in Salmdorf . Sacrificial candles can be placed in front of another statue of the Virgin Mary, which was copied from an original from the 17th century on the Lower Rhine . The benches offer seating for 84 visitors, and chairs have been set up for additional visitors.
