Robert Dorer

Eugen Robert Dorer (born February 13, 1830 in Baden ; † April 13, 1893 there ) was a Swiss sculptor .

Life

The son of the writer Eduard Dorer-Egloff studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Ludwig Schwanthaler and went to Dresden in 1848 to continue his education under the direction of Ernst Rietschel and Ernst Hähnel . In 1861 he made a trip to Italy. In 1872 he left Dresden and opened his studio in his Swiss homeland. From 1888 to 1890 he was a member of the Federal Art Commission .

Works

Robert Dorer: National Monument Geneva

Robert Dorer's first major work was the design for the Winkelried monument in Stans , which was finally carried out in 1865 by Ferdinand Schlöth . The national monument of the union of the Republic of Geneva with Switzerland, consisting of two female figures united to form a group, was executed on the lake quay in Geneva. Robert Dorer also decorated the outside of the Bern Museum (today the Bern Cantonal Bank Building ) with eight statues of famous men from the history of Bern . A draft for a Swiss national monument, intended as a fountain, was put up in front of the Federal Palace in Bern. Other works are the model for the Vitodura statue on the town house in Winterthur (1868) and figures on the Helvetia insurance building in St. Gallen (1876).
