Robert Ettenreich (born November 1, 1890 in Vienna as Robert Ritter von Neumann-Ettenreich ; † January 7, 1951 ibid) was an Austrian physicist and pioneer of radio development from the Neumann-Spallart family .

Live and act

Robert Ettenreich was the son of the judge at the constitutional court Robert von Neumann-Ettenreich (1857-1926) and a great-grandson of Josef Ettenreich . The original family name was changed in 1919 by the Lower Austrian provincial government.

Ettenreich first attended the Stiftsgymnasium Kremsmünster and then studied mathematics and physics at the University of Vienna . Already in the fourth semester he was called in by Ernst Lecher as a temporary assistant. After receiving his doctorate in 1913, he was busy moving the institute to Boltzmanngasse . Ettenreich was particularly interested in electricity and especially high-frequency technology.

In 1914 he had to join a telegraph regiment. With this he was assigned to the so-called radio detachment and became second officer of the field radio station number 23 at the front in Tyrol and took over its command in autumn 1916. He developed up to 15 km long mountain antennas and other innovations. He received a deeper insight into the amplifier system when he was transferred to Vienna in 1917 as a takeover officer. Towards the end of the war, he tested the new Telefunken tubes on the Ortler .

After the end of the First World War , he returned to the I. Physikalisches Institut in 1918 as an assistant, where he continued to work with detectors. From 1919 to 1921 he was also head of the research institute at the Technological Trade Museum (TGM) as the successor to Professor Kann and also taught physics there.

Together with Eduard Schrack , he founded Schrack AG in 1921 . A request for a postdoctoral qualification in physics in 1921 was answered positively by a commission consisting of well-known university professors such as Lercher, Felix Ehrenhaft , Gustav Jäger , Stefan Meyer , Hans Thirring , Rudolf Wegscheider , Karl Luick , so that he from the Philosophical Faculty received the Venia legendi received.

From 1922 to 1951 Ettenreich was a lecturer at the University of Vienna. He was also a lecturer at the Vienna Technical University from 1927 to 1951. From the University of Vienna he received the title in 1936 an associate professor . At Schrack he became a board member and headed the patent and development department.

In 1938, Ettenreich's teaching license was revoked because of his political stance, but received it again after the war. After Schrack also belonged to Philips , he took over their scientific and patent law advice in Holland . But he was also involved in Schrack surviving the war.

After the war, Ettenreich began lecturing again, but this was impaired by the progressive illness. In 1949 he started his own business as a patent attorney.

He was married to Elisabeth (Liesi) geb. Engelhart, daughter of the well-known Viennese painter, sculptor and co-founder of the Secession Josef Engelhart . A relative was the teacher and politician Nora Hiltl .
