Karl Luick (born January 27, 1865 in Floridsdorf , today part of Vienna , † September 20, 1935 in Vienna) was an Austrian English student .

Life

Karl Luick studied English with Jakob Schipper , German with Richard Heinzel and French with Adolf Mussafia at the University of Vienna , where he received his doctorate sub auspiciis Imperatoris in 1889 and his habilitation in English philology in 1891 . In the years 1890/1891 Karl Luick went on a study trip through England and France , after which he was a private teacher. In 1898 Luick was given a full professorship at the University of Graz, and in 1908 at the University of Vienna. In 1915 he became a full member of the Vienna Academy of Sciences . On July 3, 1925, Karl Luick received an appointment to a newly created second chair for English studies at the Berlin Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität . In 1926 he was rector of the University of Vienna. Luick was also a member of the Berlin Academy of Sciences .

He pioneered the history of the English language.
