Robert James McCloskey (born November 25, 1922 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , † November 28, 1996 in Chevy Chase , Maryland ) was an American journalist and diplomat who served as Assistant Secretary of State for Congressional Relations between 1975 and 1976 and several times Was ambassador .

Life

Robert James McCloskey, son of Thomas McCloskey and Anna Wallace, served in the US Marine Corps (USMC) between 1942 and 1945 between 1942 and 1945 after the United States entered World War II following the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, and was most recently a staff member Sergeant promoted. After the end of the Second World War he worked from 1945 to 1952, first as a bartender and then between 1952 and 1955 as a reporter . During this time he completed a degree at Temple University , which he finished in 1953 with a Bachelor of Science (BS). In 1955 he joined the US State Department and was there between 1957 and 1958 for the publication of publications and from 1958 and 1964 in the press department. During this time he also completed postgraduate studies at George Washington University from 1958 and 1959 . He eventually served as State Department spokesman for nine years between 1964 and 1973, during which time he served with Secretary of State Dean Rusk (1964-1969) and William P. Rogers (1969-1973).

McCloskey was appointed Ambassador of the United States to Cyprus on May 24, 1973 , and handed over his letter of accreditation there on June 20, 1973 as the successor to David H. Popper . He remained in this post until January 14, 1974, when Rodger Davies replaced him. Even before his dismissal from this post, he became Ambassador for Special Tasks (Ambassador at Large) on December 19, 1973 and held this position from February 14, 1974 to February 20, 1975. He was then succeeded on February 20, 1975 Appointed Assistant Secretary of State for Congressional Relations by A. Linwood Holton and as such served as Head of Bureau for Congressional Relations and International Conferences from February 21, 1975 to September 10, 1976 . His successor was Douglas J. Bennet .

After completion of this activity in the State Department took place on September 3, 1976, the appointment of Robert J. McCloskey appointed Ambassador of the United States to the Netherlands and presented on September 22, 1976 as successor to Kingdon Gould, Jr. his certification. He held this office until March 10, 1978 and was then replaced by Geri M. Joseph . Most recently he was appointed ambassador to Greece on March 9, 1978 , and handed over his credentials there on March 16, 1978 as the successor to Jack B. Kubisch . He remained in this ambassadorial post until June 27, 1981, when Monteagle Stearns succeeded him there.

Mc Closkey, who also worked for the American Academy of Diplomacy, was married to Anne Taylor Phelan since July 8, 1961. After his death on November 28, 1996, he was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
