Robert Kilpatrick, Baron Kilpatrick of Kincraig , CBE , FRSE (born July 29, 1926 in Fife , † September 16, 2015 in Edinburgh ) was a British pharmacologist (doctor) and life peer .

life and career

Kilpatrick was born on July 29, 1926 and attended Buckhaven High School .

Kilpatrick was after his medical studies from 1951 to 1954 Registrar in Medicine (comparable to an assistant doctor with specialist qualification). From 1955 to 1956 he was assistant professor (lecturer) at the University of Sheffield . From 1966 to 1975 he was a professor of clinical pharmacology and therapeutics (see therapy ) and Dean (Dean) of the Faculty of Medicine from 1970 to 1973.

At the University of Leicester , he was also Dean of the Faculty of Medicine from 1975 to 1989. From 1975 to 1983 he was also Professor and Head of the Department of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics and from 1984 to 1989 Professor of Internal Medicine . Kilpatrick was President of the General Medical Council (GMC) from 1989 to 1995 , of which he was a member from 1972 to 1976 and since 1979. From 1997 to 1998 he was President of the British Medical Association (BMA). He was at Sheffield University also chairman (chairman) of the Society of Endocrinology 1975-1978 and of the Advisory Committee on Pesticides 1975-1987.

In his younger years he suffered from tuberculosis and was one of the first patients to be treated with the antibiotic streptomycin . He was patron (saint) of the charity TB Alert .

Membership in the House of Lords

Kilpatrick was named a Life Peer as Baron Kilpatrick of Kincraig, of Dysart in the District of Kirkcaldy on February 16, 1996 . In the House of Lords , he sat as CROSSBENCHER . He gave his inaugural address on March 13, 1996; his second and last request to speak was on March 4, 1999 on the Health Bill .

He cited health, education and professional (medical) self-government as his political interests.

The frequency of his presence in the House of Lords was low from the start and remained in the low single-digit range from the 2001/2002 session. The last time he was present was on a single day in the 2005/2006 session. Since June 25, 2010 he was on leave of absence issued by the House of Lords .

Honors

Kilpatrick has received numerous honorary doctorates . In 1987 he received the title of Hon DUniv from the University of Edinburgh . In 1992 he was honored with a Doctor of Law (Hon LLD) from the University of Dundee . The University of Hull and the University of Leicester each awarded him a Doctor of Science degree in 1994 . In 1995 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Law (Hon LLD) from the University of Sheffield . In 1960 he became a member of the Physiological Society . In 1994 he became an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists . He became an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in Dublin in 1995 . In 1996 he became an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh .

Kilpatrick was 1963 Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and in 1975 a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians . He also became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in 1991 and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1998 .

He was Commander of the Order of the British Empire .
