Robert Kretschmer (born January 29, 1818 in Berghof near Schweidnitz , Province of Silesia , † May 25, 1872 in Leipzig ) was a German painter and draftsman .

Life

Robert Kretschmer trained at the Berlin Art Academy, joined the Illustrirte Zeitung in Leipzig as head of the drawing department at the beginning of 1849 and joined J. G. Bach's lithographic institute there in 1857. He turned more and more to the study of flora and fauna and in 1862 accompanied Duke Ernst II of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha to Egypt, illustrated his travel work (Leipzig 1861) and also provided drawings for scientific books (e.g. Settegasts Animal breeding ) and magazines. The drawings for Alfred Brehm's Illustrated Animal Life , which were largely based on life and in which he raised the representation of natural history to a higher level, are to be regarded as his main work .

The costume painter Albert Kretschmer was a brother of Robert.
